Questions people ask
Plain answers about fish extender exchanges: is it official, do I need one, can kids join, what if I have no cabin number yet, and how this site handles your details.
Is the fish extender exchange official?
No. It is a fan tradition run by volunteers in each sailing's group. The cruise line doesn't organise it, and this site isn't part of the cruise line either.
Do I need a fish extender to join?
You need somewhere for gifts to land. Most families hang an FE by the door, and some use a simple tote or a door hanger. Your organiser will say if the group expects one.
Can kids join?
Yes. In a general exchange everyone in the cabin receives, kids included. Many sailings also run a kids-only exchange, where only the children receive.
I don't have a cabin number yet. Can I sign up?
Usually, yes. Guaranteed bookings often get their stateroom late. Sign up with "no cabin yet" and add the number as soon as you have it.
We have two cabins. Do we count as one?
That is up to the organiser. Common rules are: only for immediate family, only if the total is five guests or fewer, or never. Ask before you sign up.
What if someone doesn't give?
Tell your organiser quietly. It happens now and then, and it is the reason most groups ask everyone to confirm they are still sailing before the cruise.
How much should I spend?
Whatever your group agrees. A few dollars a gift is common, and some groups set a cap per cabin. See our gift ideas.
What does this site do with my details?
Only what it needs to run your exchange or save your door design, and nothing is sold. The privacy page has the details in plain words.
